Try out lawn bowling in Borehamwood
Whether you already play or are trying bowls for the first time, everyone is welcome to have a go!
Bowls, or lawn bowling, is a game in which heavy balls (called bowls) are rolled by hand down a rectangular pitch towards a stationary ball (called a jack or kitty). The aim is for your ball to be as close to the stationary ball as possible. You can play in teams or one-on-one.
This sport is easily accessible to people of all ages. We have a range of equipment available to suit all ages (even very young bowlers!) The only thing you need to provide is your own flat shoes.

This is an outdoor venue with an all-weather green. It has been certified to a high standard and has four rinks.
Free sessions
The bowling green is open to the public on Wednesday afternoons from 12pm - 4pm during the time the Creative Community Café is taking place at Aberford Community Centre. Everyone of all ages are welcome to come along and have a go at bowls for free! Children must be supervised.
This outdoor activity takes place on our all-weather green. However, if the weather is very poor, the session may be held indoors inside the community centre.
Hire a rink
Private Hire Prices
Our rinks are charged at hourly rates with discounts for Communities 1st members. All prices include the use of equipment.
- £2.50 per person, per hour for members
- £3.50 per person, per hour for non-members
- £10 per hour for group bookings of up to eight people.
Please ensure you leave a window of 24 hours notice prior to bookings on weekdays, and 48 hours notice for bookings on weekends.
Deposit Charge
A security deposit of £20 is required for all private bookings. This will be returned to you after you have enjoyed the activity and returned all equipment to us.
Discounted Members' Rates
If you would like to become a Communities 1st member and receive the discounted booking rate, please email bookings@communities1st.org.uk Individual membership is available for just £10 per year.
Opening Hours
The green is available for daily hire from:
- 9am - 5pm, April - September
- 9am - 4pm, October - March
