How does Volunteering help in seeking Paid Employment?

Volunteering offers several strong reasons which individuals should consider, including whilst they are actively seeking paid employment:

  1. Valuable Work Experience and Skills Development:

    • Volunteering provides an excellent platform to gain practical work experience and develop essential skills. Whether you’re assisting at a local charity, organising events, or contributing to community projects, you’ll develop transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and time management.
    • Employers appreciate candidates who have demonstrated their abilities in real-world scenarios. Volunteering allows you to showcase and develop your skills, providing valuable experiences. It’s like building a portfolio of skills that can enhance your CV.
  2. Demonstrates Proactivity and Willingness to Learn:

    • Volunteering shows that you are proactive and eager to learn. When you volunteer, you’re taking the initiative to contribute your time and effort without expecting immediate financial rewards.
    • Employers value individuals who take the initiative, as it reflects a strong work ethic and a genuine interest in personal growth. By volunteering, you demonstrate your commitment to self-improvement and adaptability.
  3. Expands Your Network and Opens Doors:

    • Volunteering introduces you to a diverse network of people. You’ll interact with fellow volunteers, community members, and professionals from various fields.
    • Networking is a powerful tool for career advancement. By volunteering, you create connections that may lead to job opportunities. You never know when a fellow volunteer or an organisation you’ve assisted might recommend you for a paid position.
    • Additionally, volunteering within a specific industry or cause allows you to learn about potential job openings and stay informed about trends and developments.
  4. Demonstrates Dedication and Commitment:

    • Employers recognise the dedication and commitment shown by volunteers. When you invest your time and energy into a cause or organisation, it speaks volumes about your character.
    • Volunteering demonstrates that you are not solely motivated by financial gain. Instead, you prioritise contributing to a greater purpose. Employers appreciate this level of commitment and often view it as a positive trait.

Volunteering is more than just unpaid work; it’s an investment in your personal and professional growth. It enriches your skill set, expands your network, and positions you as a proactive and committed individual. Therefore, while seeking paid employment, consider volunteering—it’s a win-win situation! 🌟

Message for the Able2Enable team.

"Before Able2Enable, I wasn’t sure I would ever get back into the swing of life. Everyone else was moving at such a fast pace and I felt too behind to catch up. I spent all of my days at home, feeling so isolated from everyone else. When I was referred over, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when I met the Able2Enable team I instantly felt understood, and comfortable that they understood my needs. The Able2Enable team helped me find the most fitting role which I fell in love with before I'd even started. They motivated me to believe that I could do it; I felt so useless before. Able2Enable helps me with developing all the things I’ve missed or feel like I couldn’t do compared to more able people, and it has made me realise there is more to me than just my disabilities. I have strengths and passions, and so much more that I wouldn’t have discovered without the program. I know I will be forever grateful for the change it has brought to my life. Thank you, team."

Message for our team member, Anna.

I've been fortunate enough to have been working with Anna Leyden through the Able2Enable program for some time now. When she first began mentoring me I was not in a good place as I suffer from long term anxiety issues among other health issues, these had been compounded by the lockdowns and general atmosphere over the pandemic. However since my sessions with Anna began my mood and confidence is much improved, she has helped by providing me with exercises that complement the CBT I received from the Wellbeing team well. Thanks to her encouragement I've even been able to write a book which has given me no end of joy. Most importantly she has helped me to dip my toes into Volunteering with the local church through the warm spaces hub and look towards expanding my social horizons. The patient and holistic approach she has taken with me has worked miracles, it's the personal face to face approach organisations like the DWP don't have time to give you and I'm grateful to Anna and Able2Enable for helping me make some albeit small but vital steps.
