What is the Handyperson and Gardening Service?
Communities 1st delivers a Handyperson and Gardening Service, providing invaluable assistance to individuals aged 60+ or those on benefits with tasks they may find challenging.
By volunteering with us, you can make a meaningful impact on the lives of elderly community members, helping them regain their independence and maintain their homes. Join us in making a difference and experience the rewarding joy of volunteering!
These tasks include:
- Hedge-cutting
- Mowing
- Strimming
- Weeding
- Planting
- Organising flower beds
And general garden maintenance.
If you would like to support and be part of a gardening group that looks after community centre gardens, please reach out to us for more information.

Do you have a few hours spare to help somebody enjoy their garden again?
Who we are looking for?
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and abilities, but an interest in gardening is preferred.
We like our volunteers to:
- Have a practical interest in gardens, good common sense and initiative
- Be sensitive and have a caring attitude towards the needs of older and vulnerable people
- Be a driver with a full licence and have access to your own car
- Live locally to Hertsmere, St Albans, and Wel/Hat districts (which are the areas we cover).
No formal qualifications are required. Volunteers must be over 16 (or accompanied by a parent or guardian if under 16).
Interested? Click here to register as a volunteer and one of our team will be in touch with you shortly.
What is the time expectation?
Our volunteers can give as much or as little time as they like, but for one gardening job, we expect you will be needed for a few hours. You can fit volunteering around your other commitments as we offer flexible hours which suit both our volunteers' and clients' needs.
What are the benefits of volunteering?
Everyone has skills and experience they can contribute to their community! The benefits to you are immense, e.g.:
- Improved health and wellbeing, being out in the fresh air and helping someone in your local community.
- Satisfaction of helping people to improve their environment.
- Positive work environment, supported by the friendly Communities 1st team.
- You'll gain practical and interpersonal skills, and receive training in Equality and Diversity, and Customer Service.
