British Photography Awards Shortlist Success

Communities 1st is delighted to announce that a photograph of our canine volunteer Beau has been shortlisted for the British Photography Awards' Mobile Photography Awards 2024!

This snap was captured by Lucy from the Communications team to be used in promotional materials to advertise our Shopper Bus service (scroll down to see the shortlisted photograph).

Shopper Bus Service

Our Shopper Bus will take you from your front door to the local supermarket where volunteers can help you carry bags, fetch items, and board on and off the bus. Our vehicles are wheelchair accessible and have low-floors for those who struggle with steps. This is the perfect low-cost alternative to public transport for those who have difficulties using it to go shopping.

"The Shopper Bus service has been an absolute godsend. I recently stopped driving and without this service I would have to rely on relatives or an expensive taxi service. This enables me to maintain a level of independence... The drivers are always friendly and help me with my shopping right up to my doorstep." - Shopper Bus client.

Our Shopper Buses operate in Hertsmere, Three Rivers, Watford and Welwyn and Hatfield. We also run a Community Bus in this area, taking passengers to the Lunch Club at Jimmy Mac's.

If you would like to book a seat on the Shopper Bus, please telephone 01727 649980 or email travel@communities1st.org.uk today.

Please be aware, we cannot guarantee that you will see Beau on any community transport services.

Could You Be Our Newest Human Volunteer?

While Beau is a very friendly boy, he is not allowed to driver the Shopper Bus because his paws cannot reach the pedals. So, we are searching for Volunteer Drivers for our multi-purpose vehicles and minibuses on scheduled trips, as well as cars for community-based transport. And for Volunteer Bus Buddies who help passengers board and disembark from the buses, carry shopping and fetch items in the supermarkets.

Volunteering is incredibly rewarding! Here's what some of our volunteers have told us:

"I like to help. It's a nice thing to do and it fits in with the rest of my life." - Simon.

"Since volunteering, people have told me they've never seen me looking so well and happy!" - Elly

"Nothing is more important than the community and people." - Jem.
