Community Supermarket Volunteer

Be a local grocery hero!

Communities 1st is on the look out for friendly, reliable volunteers to help us support local people visiting the Hertfordshire Community Supermarket.

What is Hertfordshire Community Supermarket?
The supermarket is a referral-only service which supports local residents struggling with the rising cost of living. It provides affordable food and essential items, giving people the dignity of choice while ensuring they feel valued and welcome.

It was opened in April 2025, so by joining now you'll become one of our very first volunteers!

This is a Community Help Hertfordshire initiative, funded by Hertfordshire County Council.

Groceries

Whether you’re looking to give back, develop new skills, or be part of a supportive and rewarding initiative, volunteering with us is a fantastic way to make an impact.

What tasks will I do?

We’ve got a variety of tasks to suit everyone:

  • Welcomer - be the friendly face greeting customers, including vulnerable individuals, and helping them feel at ease while they shop
  • Stock star - keep things ticking behind the scenes by stocking shelves, organising items and making sure everything's in the right place
  • Checkout champion - support the checkout process to make shopping smooth and simple
  • Community connector - chat with locals, spread the word about what we do, and collect feedback to help us grow and improve
  • Hygiene hero - help us maintain a clean, safe and inviting environment for everyone
  • Set-up superstar - lend a hand with setting up and packing down; vital to keep everything running smoothly!

Where will I volunteer?

We’re looking for volunteers across Hertsmere, Stevenage, North Herts, Dacorum, East Herts, Broxbourne, Welwyn Hatfield, St Albans, Watford and Three Rivers. No matter where you are, there’s a place for you on the team.

No car? No problem! We can help you get where you need to be.

We need enthusiastic volunteers to join us for four-hour shifts either in the morning or the afternoon.
