End of Life – Death, Dying & Loss Awareness Training – Peace Hospice Care
We’ll be organising another of these introductory training courses, offered by the Compassionate Communities Coordinator at Peace Hospice Care, towards the end of the summer. These are designed to give you a foundational knowledge of how to have conversations around death, dying and loss within your local community.

Terrence Higgins Trust offer training sessions that will give you the knowledge and skills to support people living with HIV and those most at risk of acquiring HIV.

Work and Careers Mentoring Sessions
At Communities 1st we have created a space for any of our volunteers who need it to receive work and careers mentoring sessions.
Our mentors can meet with a group of mentees to work through themes, ideas and experiences to help you develop your knowledge and plans going forward.

Spot the Signs Save a Life – Suicide Prevention Training
We are supporting a Hertfordshire wide suicide prevention campaign which works to remove the stigma of talking openly about mental ill health and suicide. This excellent, fully funded training course helps you to become more aware of mental ill health, learn what practical steps you can take to prevent suicide and find out where you can signpost to for mental health services available in Hertfordshire.
Making Every Contact Count Training – MECC
Making every contact count is an approach to behaviour change that aims to encourage changes in behaviour that have a positive effect on people’s health and wellbeing.
Making changes such as stopping smoking, improving diet, increasing physical activity, losing weight and reducing alcohol consumption can help people to reduce their risk of poor health significantly.
You can discover how the approach these conversations using this virtual online tool.
There is also a free introductory course available through the NHS workforce training platform. If you register on the website you will be provided with evidence of learning. We recommend you do this as we’d love to add this training to your volunteering records.

Lateral Flow Testing Assistants
Calling volunteers in the AL6-AL10 area. A local school needs your assistance again in September to support them with Lateral Flow Testing for pupils returning to school. If you are a fully registered volunteer with Communities 1st able to give a few hours per week to help with this much needed role, please email Carmen at c.dillon@whcvs.org.uk.
Fundraising & Bid Writing Support – Herts Asian Women’s Association (HAWA)
HAWA have been doing outstanding work throughout the pandemic supporting their members with shopping/prescription delivery, telephone befriending, and delivering food from food banks etc. They have also been advocating on behalf of members who are struggling with issues such as paying Council Tax online, IT issues, housing, debt and unemployment. Many of their members do not have English as a first language. They are in urgent need of financial assistance, and are seeking someone willing to help them write funding applications.
Java Script & Google Apps Specialist – St Albans Good Neighbour Scheme
A short term assignment is available for an experienced Google Workspace user and developer who can help SAGNS with the implementation of a new secure intranet workspace. This is a short term project (as little as a couple of days) as you help to fix bugs in the code and configure the Workspace. Tasks would involve supporting SAGNS volunteers, updating their websites (a public website and an intranet website), and generally keeping an eye on operations.
Crafting Workshops Volunteers – Urgently Needed
Caring volunteers with crafting skills are required to teach workshops with a group of women in Welwyn Hatfield. Workshops would take place in person and can last a couple of hours at a time. Any materials that are needed can be provided. If you are a confident crafter and want to share these talents with others – jewellery making, making toiletries, baking, art, crochet, knitting, wreath making, candles etc. - get in touch.
Accounts Examination Support – Potential Kids
Potential Kids is a small, award winning charity based in Welwyn/Hatfield that provides learning, social and sports opportunities to Neurodiverse children and young people. They are looking for an independent accountant, willing to volunteer to verify their account tax for 2019/20. The whole of their year’s accounts are on zero; this can be spot checked or looked at in totality. The balance sheet and P&L have also been done. The accounts are due by the end of May to companies house and with the charities commission end of June.

NEW Board of Directors – Radio Verulam
Radio Verulam, the not for profit radio station for St Albans and South Hertfordshire, is looking for someone to join their Board of Directors. The volunteer should have some experience of management within a voluntary organisation, a good grasp of corporate governance, and understanding of basic finance, and a passion for our local area. They do not need radio or media experience. Radio Verulam would particularly favour a candidate with a marketing background.
NEW Group Facilitators – Mind in Mid Herts
Mind in Mid Herts are looking for volunteers to support the running of social support groups in our St Albans centre.
Volunteers are required for the following days and timings:
- Tuesday 10-11:30am – Talking/ wellbeing group
- Wednesday 2-3:30pm – Quiz/games group
- Thursday 10-11:30am – Art and craft
- Thursday 2-3:30pm – Talking/wellbeing
The role involves helping to set up for the sessions and then engaging with the Services Users in a positive manner during the session. Sessions are informal and provide an opportunity for people to chat. Staff will be available to support but we are looking for confident people who would be happy to run the sessions. Experience of art/quizzes not required!
NEW Parent & Toddler Playgroup helper – The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army are looking for volunteers for their Parents & Toddlers Playgroup community programme. This is an occcasion for parents and their little kids to meet new parents and friends, play together, learn how to build a healthy social relationship within the society. The Parent & Toddler Playgroup and Babysong programmes are once a week, very well recognised activity in St Albans. The activities are for one and half hour session in the morning, and finish before lunch time. The volunteers should be happy to talk to new people, to help others, and generally kind to little children. The volunteers should be happy to be with children, too. Coffee/Tea is provided. Travel cost can be paid. No age limits. No training required. DBS check required.
NEW Arts and Crafts Volunteer – Armoral Hill
Armoral Hill are looking for volunteers for Arts and Crafts activities with their elderly members. Armoral Hill offers activities, afternoon tea and friendship to elderly people in the St Albans area. As they are reopening, they are seeking new volunteers to support their members with a range of activities, particularly arts and crafts.
The volunteers will:
• Plan age appropriate arts and crafts activities for the members on a monthly basis,
• Commit to volunteering one Thursday afternoon each month,
• Be friendly, patient and kind.
NEW Funding Volunteer – The Living Room
The Living Room in Stevenage need someone who can help them with fundraising with a time commitment of few hours per week. No qualification required. The volunteer should be reliable and a committed to help regularly as part of a really inclusive team. The Living Room will offer an induction, training and support and you will be fully insured.

Could you share your skills by running a group class? We are currently looking for volunteers who have a skill they would be willing to teach to a group of people. Litter Picker Volunteers – Communities 1st
If you're passionate about keeping our public spaces clean, we have a role for you! We are looking for volunteers who are ready to help with litter picking. This is a flexible role with scope for working in a friendly team of volunteers. Equipment will be supplied to you. Litter picks are currently being arranged in St Albans, but the programme may expand to other areas.
Gardening Volunteers – Communities 1st
We need volunteers to help people tidy their gardens. If you’re willing to mow a few lawns and pull a few weeds, to allow an isolated person to enjoy their garden, please get in touch with us. Anyone offering their time will be recorded on our system so they can be offered gardening work when it comes up. Social distancing measures will be strictly adhered to in this role.
Odd Jobs Assistants – Communities 1st
Do you have the DIY skills and the time to help people who are struggling to maintain their property? From fitting a lightbulb to some light painting and decorating, from fixing a lock to setting up a new television, we need positive volunteers with skills and patience to help with our handyperson service. Volunteers need to be willing to travel across Hertsmere, St Albans and Welwyn Hatfield. If this sounds like you, get in touch.
Shopping Support Brokers – Communities 1st
Our shopping help service will be getting busier again soon, as more requests for essential shopping come in from vulnerable people isolating. Our team of shopping brokers liaise with clients and then arrange for ‘broker’ volunteer shoppers to carry out and deliver shops. We offer training on our CRM system so that you can work from home. If you are reliable, organised and friendly, please get in touch to find out more.
Case Study Callers/Writers – Communities 1st
There are so many ‘good news’ stories that take place at Communities 1st all the time. We want to capture these and produce case studies that will illustrate the enormous benefits volunteering can have. If you have a background in writing or interviewing, we would love to hear from you. This is a remote role and the work can be done in your own time. Drop in Volunteers - Open Door Homelessness Charity
This role involves preparing and serving lunch to our guests, working alongside another volunteers in the kitchen and helping clear away after the service. The charity ask for a commitment of weekly or fortnightly shifts for this role. We’re looking for volunteers to fill vacancies on Wednesday, Monday and Friday, 2pm - 4pm.
Night Shelter Volunteer - Open Door Homelessness Charity
Volunteers work in teams of two in our kitchen preparing a hot cooked evening meal. We cook meals for 12 residents and all the ingredients are provided. We ask for a weekly or fortnightly commitment to a set shift for this role. We need volunteers most evenings but particularly the weekends, 6:30 - 8:30pm (shifts available 7 days a week).
Tutor for iPad/iPhone beginners classes in St Albans – Computer Friendly
Computer Friendly is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to tutor short courses for iPad and iPhone beginners in St Albans. You will join our team of tutors based in St Albans and Harpenden, running 4-6 week courses, two hours per week, for small classes of older students. This is a great opportunity for someone who is reasonably proficient with an Apple iPad, has some time available during the working week and would like to help people get online.
Tutor for Word and Excel classes in St Albans – Computer Friendly
Computer Friendly is looking for a volunteer to tutor short courses on Word and Excel in St Albans and Harpenden. You will join their team of tutors running 4-6 week courses, two hours per week, for small classes of students who wish to learn the basics of Microsoft Word and Excel. Each course subject is held around 6 times per year, during term times. Knowledge of PowerPoint and Publisher is also a bonus.
Neighbourhood Watch District Coordinator Watford – HertsWatch
HertsWatch are seeking a Watford based volunteer who takes an active interest in community safety. You’ll form a liaison with your local Watch Liaison Officer from the Police. You’ll be tasked with maintaining contact with the Ward and NHW coordinators in your area regarding nuisance problems or suspicious behaviour in the vicinity. You’ll be expected to pass on any information that might be useful in solving a crime to the police or local authority and building up the data bank to help solve nuisance problems.
Let’s Chat Telephone Support Volunteers – Welwyn Hatfield CVS
Let’s Chat is a telephone support service, which provides regular calls to isolated people. WHCVS are looking for 2-3 volunteers who are willing to chat to some of their lonely residents in the Welwyn Hatfield area on a weekly basis. Could you take some time to provide friendly conversation to people who are isolated due to being housebound, having a mental or physical illness/disability, or living away from family?
Support Volunteers – Home-Start Watford and Three Rivers
Home-Start is a voluntary organisation where volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes. Volunteers who are parents or have parenting experience understand that sometimes family life can be tough. Could you build confidence and independence of a young family by offering support, friendship and practical help? Full support, induction and ongoing training and development opportunities are given.
Gardener Volunteers – Blessed Earth
Do you enjoy being outside and have an interest in gardening? How would you like to learn how to take care of plants and trees, and how to properly prune and maintain them? Blessed Earth organises self-funded community projects for charities and vulnerable adults. They are looking for volunteers to support their work at these events. No experience is necessary but you should be willing to learn. This is a flexible, sociable role with a really positive impact, base in St Albans.
Foodbank Volunteers – Red Trust Bushey
Red Trust Bushey is a charity supporting people who may be facing difficult circumstances in the Little Reddings area. They are looking for volunteers to join their Foodbank that is open on Friday mornings at St James’s Church House in Bushey. The ideal candidate will be understanding, hardworking and a team player. Volunteers are required to help sort food donations and deliver food parcels to clients. You would be required for 2-3hrs on a Friday morning but this can be discussed during the application process.
Gardening Club Facilitator – Red Trust Bushey
Red Trust Bushey are looking for a volunteer gardener club facilitator to lead activities in their new gardening club at the Finch Lane allotments in Bushey. Ideally, you should enjoy working with people, have good experience with planting/maintaining gardens, and have an interest in supporting others to learn gardening skills. They are looking for 2-3 hours per week but this can be negotiated.
Arts and Crafts Volunteers – H’Arts in Mind
If you have artistic skills/talents you would like to share, are good at working in a team, and would like to help people in your community, H’arts in Mind need you! They are looking for volunteers to contribute to their Community Arts and Crafts markets, coming soon in Hatfield. Expenses will be paid (travel, lunch, coffees). Promotions & Admin Volunteers – H’Arts in Mind
Do you have an interest in art and passion for helping people? Volunteers are needed to promote and assist H’Arts in Mind work, including visiting community centres/churches etc. to communicate what the charity can offer. They need help distributing leaflets, assisting with their art and craft markets, helping on days out, and with part time admin, including answering emails and phone calls, directing people, and sending enquiries.
Volunteer DJs – No Barriers Radio
Do you enjoy playing a great mix of tracks that will really get people in the mood for dancing? If yes, No Barriers Radio would love to hear from you! They are a radio station aimed at individuals with some form of disability/learning difficulties, who are looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteer DJ. You’ll need to be approachable and friendly, with good time management skills, honesty and a willingness to learn.
Fundraising Volunteers – No Barriers Radio
No Barriers Radio are interested in helping others to break down barriers for people with learning disabilities. They need help to research sponsorship events and draft an activity plan that makes the best use of volunteers’ time and capabilities. Previous experience is not essential, good communication skills would be a bonus. The ability to write letters, a good telephone manner and the confidence to interact with people at events would be great. Most of all they are looking for people with an interest in helping others to overcome physical and psychological adversity.
Technicians – No Barriers Radio
No Barriers Radio are looking for technicians who are keen to gain experience and build a professional portfolio of work for potential employers. You could be ‘between’ jobs right now or perhaps recently retired. You’ll need to be able to act on your own initiative and have an interest in producing great sound. Applicants must be motivated and be able to work with people who have a learning disability.
Gardening Volunteers – The Abbey Line
We are looking for volunteers to help with a programme of exciting gardening projects along the Abbey Line in 2021. The Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership (including Communities 1st) has a number of projects scheduled for the coming months, to bring some greenery and colour to the platforms along the Abbey Line. Call Handlers – Family Lives
Family Lives operate a free confidential helpline for anyone experiencing difficulties in their family or relationship. Their volunteers take calls from parents and carers on separation, isolation, depression, bullying and abuse, behavioural problems, etc. You can find out more about their services on their website. Trained volunteers commit to weekly four hour shifts, comprising three hours ‘online’ and a debrief session with your supervisor. Volunteers should have experience of parenting or working with children/young people, and be good listeners with a willingness to learn. You will need a PC/laptop, headset and good Wifi.
Compassionate Neighbours – Peace Hospice Care
Do you like a chat over a cuppa? By sharing your time and companionship you can make a difference to someone lonely or at risk of isolation. Compassionate Neighbours provide social and emotional support to people in their communities who are coming towards the end of life due to age or illness. Compassionate Neighbours help others by: visiting regularly, offering friendship, emotional support and a listening ear, helping people to do the things they enjoy, and helping people stay connected to their community, family and friends.
Volunteer Helpline Responders – St Albans Good Neighbour Scheme
This role is flexible, you just need to use your landline or mobile, usually for one day per month, to receive request from clients and find suitable transport volunteers. Full training on Optimise will be given. The charity's phone line is open from 9 – 1 every day of the year, with any extra cost of calls arising covered by the Scheme. Apply via the website as a ‘Duty Officer’ volunteer.
Workshop Volunteers – Emmaus Hertfordshire
40 formerly homeless people are living at the Emmaus community in Hill End, St Albans, and running a workshop where they carry out minor repairs, renovations and repurpose donated items before they are sold. They need people with new skills to help make this project a success. If you have a creative flair or design experience – they would love to hear from you! Monday to Friday works best for this activity. You would not be expected to do a full five day week, but a regular day/s is essential.
Keeping in Touch Volunteers – Carers in Hertfordshire
Carers in Herts need volunteers to help them reach out to unpaid family carers. This charity supports people caring for elderly, disabled, physically or mentally ill people, as well as those misusing drugs or alcohol. The charity is currently calling carers to ensure they are supported during this difficult time. You will be based at home to make the calls. Most calls are made between 9:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday during office hours.
Virtual Note Taker Volunteers – Carers in Hertfordshire
Carers in Hertfordshire aims to provide unpaid family and friend carers with a platform to speak up and make their voices heard, and to improve the services that are available to them. The forums cover a variety of topic areas including: Aspergers and Autism, Dementia, Drugs and Alcohol, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health. They are looking for volunteers who can take notes for their forums and meetings, that take place onling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You will need to be able to edit a word document.
Friendly Talker Volunteers – Redbourn Community Group
Redbourn Community Group are looking for volunteers to make regular, friendly phone calls to people in our community who may be feeling lonely or isolated and would welcome some regular contact. Could you be a friend to someone in the Redbourn community?
Group Support Volunteer – Live Well Borehamwood
Live Well is a small community group for over 50s based in Borehamwood which supports older people from the local and surrounding area. They are looking for an enthusiastic, positive and reliable volunteer to support their work. They are particularly looking for someone who can set up heavy tables before group sessions on Monday afternoons at 12:30 and also pack them away after sessions at 2:45pm based at Farriers Way Community Hall in Borehamwood. You would be required to generally help facilitate social sessions but you are also welcome to participate in activities. Applicant need to be able to move tables.

NEW Treasurer Trustee – The Living Room
The Living Room is looking for a Treasurer on the Board of Trustees. The Living Room works locally in Hertfordshire to ensure that adults suffering with any type of addiction can access the treatment and support they need to achieve sustained abstinence and recovery, breaking the cycle of addiction.They are now seeking a Treasurer with charity finance experience to join the Board of Trustees. The Treasurer will oversee the financial affairs of the organisation, and report to the Board of Trustees at regular intervals on the financial health of the charity.
There are quarterly Board meetings, with additional meetings scheduled as appropriate up to a maximum of six annually, held online or in person and usually in the evening. Trustees are also expected to attend occasional training and public or private events, such as fundraising events, strategic planning activities and away days.
Trustees – Barbara Bus Fund
Barbara Bus Fund is a registered charity based at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore. The fund initially aimed to provide a means of transport for hospital patients and people in surrounding areas who were unable to use public transport or standard vehicles. Today the charity has a selection of specially converted vehicles that can accommodate wheelchairs. Could you join this charity's board and share your expertise to help them continue this fantastic work?

Volunteer Drivers – Communities 1st
We’re always in need of people willing to help us deliver our transport service. Our new scheme supports the NHS locally to fulfil GP and vaccination appointments, as well as hospital visits. If you're willing to drive a larger vehicle, we also run a much-needed shopper bus service. Expenses can be claimed at 45p/mile. Note, you may be required to travel further afield than your immediate local area.
NEW Volunteer Drivers – Hertsmere Mencap
Hertsmere Mencap supports 250 children and adults with learning disabilities and their families and carers. They run a minibus service taking members to regular social clubs in Borehamwood, St Albans and Hatfield on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday evenings. You will only be expected to volunteer once every few weeks as part of a rota, an average of 3 hours per month. You will be assisting the driver collecting members, accompanying them to the local clubs, and helping with picking up from the club, taking them to their front door when necessary.
NEW Volunteer Drivers – Armoral Hill
Armoral Hill Day Centre are seeking volunteer drivers to transport elderly members to their social club each week. Armoral Hill offers activities, afternoon tea and friendship to elderly people in the St Albans area. Some members require transport to get to and from the centre and so Armoral Hill needs new volunteer drivers.
The drivers will:
• Collect one person from their home each Thursday afternoon and take them to the centre at Hall Place Gardens, St Albans,
• Drop the person home later that afternoon,
• Be friendly and patient,
• Have a full driving licence.
Volunteer Food Delivery Driver
HAPpy Holiday Programmes provide free holiday activities to disadvantaged children and those in receipt of benefits related free school meals. The role will involve Collecting Hot meals from our Food Hubs and delivering them to Holiday Programmes around the county. Returning Catering equipment to the Food Hubs in time for the following day's service.
Day Services Driver – Rennie Grove Hospice Care
Rennie Grove Hospice Care provides care and support for adults and children diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illness and their families. They need enthusiastic and committed volunteers to transport patients to and from their own homes into Grove House. You will need to use your own car. Without this service, many patients would not be able to access the vital services that are offered at Grove House.
Minibus Drivers – Live Well Borehamwood
Live Well Borehamwood committee and volunteers have established a group for over 50’s which is supportive, fun and promotes independence and mental wellbeing. They require a patient and cheerful volunteer minibus driver every Monday at 12 noon for approximately 30 - 45 mins, and 3pm for approximately 30 - 45 mins. You may be required ad-hoc for longer journeys when they go on planned trips. Applicants will need a UK license and to be over 25 and under 70 years of age. New drivers will be able to familiarise themselves with the vehicle before taking a minibus out.
Volunteer Drivers (using own vehicle) – St Albans Good Neighbour Scheme
St Albans Good Neighbour Scheme volunteers help with lifts to medical appointments, shopping, collecting prescriptions, some practical help (gardening, etc.) and befriending. Their clients are elderly, unwell, lonely, disabled or facing a crisis and don’t have anyone else to turn to. The role is flexible, the only requirements are that you have a driving licence, access to a car, and get along with people. The charity will pay mileage costs. Apply via their website as a ‘Transport volunteer’ and they will help you complete a DBS check.
Volunteer drivers (using organisation’s vehicles) – Barbara Bus Fund Stanmore
The Barbara Bus Fund provides a wheelchair-accessible community transport service for wheelchair users who are unable to transfer and travel in a standard car seat and relies on volunteer drivers to assist their passengers. The role is flexible and based on the RNOH at Stanmore. The only requirements are that you like driving, like people, are aged over 25 years and have no more than 6 penalty points. You will need to complete a DBS check.
