The first week of June is a special week at Communities1st. It is Volunteer’s week! An annual event that celebrates the volunteers' contribution to local communities. We thank each one of you!

 

It's Diabetes Awareness week from 12th June. Diabetes affects more people in UK than any other health condition. It has a major impact on one’s life and can cause a number of other health complications. Join in for an hour on our Diabetes Awareness session to gain a better understanding of diabetes, guidelines on signposting and how to support people living with diabetes.  

Support your child and help them be confident with numbers by signing up to our Multiply courses. These in person sessions will focus on providing help to parents and carers in supporting children to enjoy working with numbers and gain an important skill in a fun and engaging way. Money Management

Managing personal finances and making decisions about money are an important part of everyday life.

In this session you will understand how to budget and keep track of your spending and gain an overview on how finance is designed whilst improving your numeracy skills.

This course is funded by Multiply a nation wide project to help adults improve their numeracy skills.  Please note this is an in-person course.

Help your Child love Numbers

This in person session will teach you how to improve your child's confidence in numbers by incorporating activities and awareness in everyday tasks.

The best way to improve confidence in numbers is by doing tasks where children are focused on something they enjoy and numbers are part of an activity. This in turn will improve your confidence as parent to continue to help your child develop this important life skill. Introducing Arlo the Alien our Children's storybook.

Shopping on a Budget
This course helps you understand the benefits of shopping on a budget. It will look at current shopping habits and highlight areas where savings can be made. It will improve your confidence in planning lists on budgets whilst improving your numeracy skills.

Make Do and Mend
Garment repair can be painful and expensive. We have so many clothes in our cupboards that occupy space and are loved that we don’t have the heart to throw them away. Mending your clothes and upcycling them not only helps save money but also helps reduce long term impacts on the environment.
In this session, participants will learn simple hand sewing techniques such as button sewing, hemming and altering at waist, whilst improving their numeracy skills and save money.

No sewing skills are needed. Just bring a garment that needs a simple hand repair and you will get the opportunity to begin working on it. If they wish, participants may bring their own sewing supplies.

AWARENESS TRAINING SESSIONS

Diabetes Awareness Training

This one hour awareness session aims to impart knowledge and understanding of diabetes. The session will give an understanding of the signs and symptoms and risk factors of Type 1 and 2 diabetes. It will provide participants with preventive measures they can take and talk about the correlation between food and diabetes. The session will also cover possible treatments and complications that arise from the condition. will provide participants guidelines on signposting and how those living with diabetes can be supported.

Deaf Awareness Training
This online session will give the confidence and basic skills to communicate with those who are living with deafness and hearing loss. It will enable them to understand deafness, signs that someone can’t hear you, body positions and communicating.

Dementia Friends Training

A Dementia Friend is somebody that learns about dementia so they can help their community. This in person training will raise awareness and understanding of the challenges people with Dementia face in the community.

The training will involve an awareness session followed by a round table discussions on how participant can put into practice what they have just learnt.

Gambling Impacts and Recovery Virtual Event Gambling addiction is often not in isolation. There are related harms. At this virtual event we aim to raise awareness of organisations supporting those who lived experience of gambling and the impact of these related harms.  

Joining this webinar will be guest speakers from The Passage, Brent Service Users Council (B3) and those with lived experience of gambling and recovery.

Think CO- An Introductory workshop to Carbon Monoxide(CO) risks at home

The aim of this virtual Zoom workshop is to raise awareness of carbon monoxide risks for people who work in the homes of vulnerable people. This online, hour long workshop is aimed at front line staff and volunteers from social care, NHS, FRS, voluntary and private sectors working in the UK who visit vulnerable people in their homes every day.

Spot the Signs Training Dates

Anyone working in primary care or in the voluntary sector with adults is able to sign up to either a 1 hour or a 3 hour fully funded training sessions on learning how to Spot the Signs of those at risk.

Find Your Career Path - A 1-day, 3 hour workshop
This 3-hour workshop taught online and in real time cover job roles, qualifications and skills needed to work in any industry. Discover your own skills and qualities, and how they can be transferred to suitable job roles. You will be using research skills to plan an early career path into any industry.
