The Role of Community Organisations in Tackling Inequalities
Liz has a great sense of humour! I’m often struck while talking to volunteers that they have a huge sense of fun; we laugh a lot! Liz is no exception. One of the reasons she volunteers is because she enjoys helping bring a smile to people’s faces. This isn’t to say that she doesn’t take her volunteering seriously, far from it, but rather she recognises the great benefits of having a laugh. Indeed, there is a growing body of scientific research which points to the many health benefits, physical and emotional, of laughter.
In October 2023 Communities 1st welcomed Para Dance UK that brought in an inspiring element of inclusive dance, championing the values of inclusion, accessibility, and participation for all, irrespective of ability.
Together we have created a series of courses suitable for a wide range of people, from those using dance as part of their activities with disabled people to students of Primary and Secondary schools.
Watford's community Door-to-Store Shopper Bus Service has reached a significant milestone, achieving over 100 bookings since its launch in January.

The service – led by Communities 1st and supported by Watford Borough Council – is designed to provide convenient and accessible transportation for residents, and it has gained notable traction within the community since its introduction.
