Soil Squad CIC
Soil Squad is a Community Interest Company based in St Albans, founded in 2024 to help communities embrace regenerative and sustainable composting practices. Our mission is to turn organic waste into a resource that enriches soils, supports biodiversity, and strengthens local ecosystems—all while fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship.
At the heart of our work is the Community Composting Hub at Sandridge Road Allotments in St Albans. Here, we recycle food waste collected from residents, cafes, restaurants, businesses, and charities (through a funded service) across the city. To keep things green, food waste is delivered to the hub via a walking collection service, ensuring zero emissions. The resulting compost is lovingly crafted to industry standards, rich in life and nutrients, and shared back with subscribers or sold locally. This vibrant compost supports plant health, boosts soil vitality, and enhances biodiversity in our community, showcasing a thriving circular economy that balances human needs within the planet’s boundaries.
Composting with Schools: A Child-Centred Approach
We’re passionate about inspiring the next generation to care for their planet. Soil Squad CIC supports schools in becoming zero food waste pioneers by composting their organic materials right on-site. From simple compost heaps to advanced hot composting systems that handle all food waste, we help schools choose solutions that fit their needs. These child-centred initiatives not only reduce waste but also engage students in hands-on learning about the circular economy, sustainability, and the fascinating world of soil microbes. Our goal is to spark curiosity and empower children to be environmental change-makers, making composting a natural part of their daily lives.
Learning together: Community Composting Hub
Our Community Composting Hub doubles as a demonstration and learning space, inviting the community to see the value of organic waste through practical, interactive experiences. Visitors can explore a variety of composting methods, including hot and cold composting, wormeries, bokashi fermentation, bioreactors, and leaf mould preparation. Whether at home, school, or work, these insights help the community transform waste into a regenerative resource that supports healthier soils and a more resilient ecosystem.
Join us in turning waste into a treasure that nurtures both the earth and our community!
