Earthworks St. Albans is a registered charity that offers trainees, often with learning difficulties or mental health problems, work experience and training in horticultural and land-based skills. We have a three-acre site in Hixberry Lane, St. Albans that is managed on environmental principles. Earthworks staff and volunteers work - and learn - with the trainees to maintain the site, with its gardens, vegetable beds, orchard, woodland, wood yard and wild flower meadow. We also run workshops for groups of school children, host corporate team building days, hold public open days at our site and run a monthly stall at the St Albans Farmers market. At Earthworks we value the hard work and commitment of our volunteers, whose dedication and time spent supporting our trainees helps to foster an atmosphere of inclusion and equality that people with learning difficulties may not experience in the wider community. Volunteers are crucial to our ethos of “People of all abilities, learning and working together” and by sharing their unique skills, knowledge and experience with the staff and trainees, our volunteers help to drive Earthworks forward and develop the activities undertaken on the site.
