The Spring Budget and Its Significance for the local VCSE sector

The Spring Budget presents both challenges and opportunities. It's an invitation to reflect on our priorities, advocate for inclusive policies, and work towards a future where every individual and community has the opportunity to thrive. It’s a chance to evaluate its broader implications on society, especially within the voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) sector.

The budget's commitment to investing in technology and prevention within our public services marks a step forward in modernising and enhancing the efficiency of these essential services. This recognition of technology's pivotal role is welcome; however, it brings to light the critical issue of digital inclusion. Access to digital resources is increasingly becoming a fundamental right, critical for engaging with the modern world. Yet, as recently agreed ‘policy position statement’ on bridging the digital divide, many individuals are left behind due to socio-economic barriers. Ensuring digital fluency goes beyond mere access; it requires a concerted effort to build confidence, skills, and competence across all demographics.

The importance of supporting local government and community funding cannot be overstressed. The budget's allocations in areas such as the Household Support Fund and community-led housing are steps in the right direction. However, there's a continuous need for dialogue between the government and the VCSE sector both nationally and locally to address the challenges of financial sustainability and equitable resource distribution. This collaboration is vital for developing long-term solutions that reflect the diverse needs of our communities.

Shaping the Future Together

Our work with members on developing VCSE position statements ahead of the upcoming elections is a reflection of our collective commitment to addressing societal challenges. These statements cover crucial areas such as cost-of-living, digital inclusion, health and wellbeing, equity and diversity, employability, environmental sustainability, and sector collaboration. They serve as a foundation for our advocacy, guiding our efforts to influence policy and foster change that benefits our communities.

In light of the Spring Budget, our call to decision-makers is to engage in meaningful dialogue with the VCSE sector, acknowledging the unique insights and contributions that our collective experience brings. We urge a commitment to policies that not just react to immediate fiscal realities but are also grounded in an understanding of their long-term impact on social equality, digital inclusion, and community resilience.
