Fantastic Friday Update

June is here and hopefully it will bring us sun and warmer temperatures and with it come new events to attend and awareness campaigns to celebrate.  

National Carers Week will start on Monday (10 -16 June) and within its celebration on Thursday, 13  June from 10:30am to 12:30pm you can find Communities 1st at Bishop's Stortford Library.

Communities 1st will attend various Community Events happening during the summer and we would love to get the help and support from our amazing volunteers. If you see us there, do come to us and say "hello"!! See more information below. 

As always, we have included the latest Action for Happiness monthly calendar for you to take a look at. This edition is all about finding new ways to make the month of June a little more joyful.

Have an air fryer or considering buying one? Looking to cook cheaper and healthier? Come along to our Cooking with an Air Fryer 3 hour session. Learn to cook with one, add new recipes and learn about the cost savings. Cooking tips will be provided on this free course along with a chance to taste food cooked in the air fryer. 

Any Hertfordshire resident aged 19 and over is welcome to attend this course. Participants are eligible for the draw to win an air fryer if they have obtained a D grade or below in their Maths GCSE (or equivalent), or are in receipt of any benefits.

During Carers Week (10-16 June) free drop in events are taking place in different locations. 

Attendees can enjoy food samples from HILS (Health & Independent Living Support), ‘try before you buy’ aids and adaptations from Occupational Therapists and receive free activity aids from Herts Sports Partnership. There will also be the opportunity for attendees to learn emergency CPR skills and get mental health support with an NHS Talking Therapist.

Next week, events will be held from 10:30am to 12:30pm:

• Stevenage Central Library: Monday, 10 June
• Croxley Green Library: Wednesday, 12 June
• Bishop’s Stortford Library: Thursday, 13 June

The vibrant festival will be making its return on Saturday 22 June. Communities 1st will be taking part during the festival and we are looking for some help from our volunteers.

Below, you can see a timetable that we have created to outline at what stages throughout the day we are looking for some support. Of course you are welcome to stay for as long as you would like to support the event. If you would like to find it more you can give us a call or send an email. 

Saturday 22 June 2024

• Between 8am to 11am - Come along to support the Communities 1st team in setting up gazebos, tables and chairs for the exciting day ahead at the Vintry Gardens. 
• Between 10:30am to 12pm - Help out along the procession route to help people find their way.
• Between 12pm to 5pm - Help across the various check points to offer additional support to visitors of the festival and procession.
• Between 5pm to 7pm - Stick around to help the Communities 1st team put all of their supplies away, ready for the next exciting event.

On Monday, "International Men's Health Week" and "Loneliness Awareness Week" take place (10th-16th June) and we would like to remind you about "Men That Meet", a community group for Hertsmere's men - a relaxed place to meet for good conversation, interesting activities and complimentary refreshment.

Windsor Hall (Blyth Close, Gateshead Road, Borehamwood, WD6 4EE) 

Lots of work is in progress to make it easier, safer and more enjoyable to walk, wheel and cycle in Hertsmere so that more people can choose to make their everyday journeys in an active and sustainable way. Local communities are asked to give their feedback by Wednesday 26th June on draft walking and cycling networks and make suggestions for improvements in and around the following areas:

· Borehamwood & Elstree

· Potters Bar & South Mimms

· Radlett, Shenley & Aldenham

· Bushey

Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of action to tackle climate change and protect nature, taking place in communities nationwide from 8 to 16 June 2024. 

Para Dance UK aims to develop and promote dance as an inclusive leisure activity across the country for those who would otherwise be excluded.
Para Dance UK offers and runs courses online for people who want to provide their own inclusive dance classes.

• Mondays Adult Dance Club - Mondays, 10am - 10.30am 
• Through The Decades - Wednesdays, 11am - 11.30am - Suitable for Care Homes, Day care Centres older people and adults
• Primary After School Dance Club - Wednesdays, 4.15pm – 4.45pm

• Hours: 4 hours per week (2 x 2hrs) including morning, daytime, evening & weekend work
