Fantastic Friday Update

The end of July is approaching alongside interesting events.

"International Self-Care Day" is a worldwide event observed on the 24 July each year, promoting the need to practise self-care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This day marks the final day of the international self-care month (24 June - 24 July). Click here to find out more about this campaign. If you want to keep yourself fit but cannot leave your home, have a look at the Para dance classes. 

National Schizophrenia Awareness Day takes place every year on 25 July. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about schizophrenia, a chronic mental health condition affecting men and women equally.

On Saturday 27 July the spotlight is on National Marine Week that lasts till 11 August. This year's theme is "Sea" the Connection and it highlights how as an island nation we are all closely connected to the sea and why a healthy thriving marine environment matters.

Book swap shop and family gardening activities

Throughout the summer holidays, our Community Centre in Farriers Way is getting busier and busier.

A book swap activity started on Thursday 18 July and will take place on every Thursday. Why don't you bring your old books and swap them for ones you haven't read yet? There will be a stand set up in or outside Farriers Way. You can also pop in for free refreshments whilst you select your books!

In August, every Thursday fun activities will take place in the garden and these will include: planting, plant pot decorating, growing your own veg and more.

You will learn how to keep a track of your spending, whilst improving your numeracy skills at the same time!

The Better Health Bus brings health and wellbeing to you, travelling around the county every week to provide free NHS Health Checks, wellbeing checks and specialist advice and support to help people stop smoking.

Samaritan Awareness Day

This awareness day takes place on 24 July (24/7) aims to raise awareness throughout July, so to let people know that they can talk to them, day or night, 24/7.

Summer holidays in Hertfordshire start around Friday 19 July and end in September. Communities1st has compiled a list of all available low-cost meal deals and travel options for you.

The Summer Reading Challenge 2024

The Summer Reading Challenge is a free holiday activity for children.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is all about creativity. From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there's something for everyone. Children will be able to find new reads linked to their favourite creative arts and access free activities at the library.

Children can take part either at the library or online. The in-person and online challenges are separate.

Live Longer Better in Cowley Hills

This FREE event will consist of a mix of speakers, informative stalls and physical activity sessions.

Take part in free local activities to help you stay strong, maintain balance and enhance flexibility alongside other people from your community.

Sessions include:

• Walking Football
• Seated Strength and Balance
• Beginner Tai Chi
• Back to Bowls
• Herts Health Walks
• Recreational Badminton

Please bring a water bottle on the day, as water facilities will be available. A light lunch will be provided, so please ensure to include any dietary requirements on your booking form. Please wear comfortable clothing and supportive shoes. All equipment will be provided for on the day.

Para Dance UK aims to develop and promote dance as an inclusive leisure activity across the country for those who would otherwise be excluded.
Para Dance UK offers and runs courses online for people who want to provide their own inclusive dance classes. A limited number of fully funded courses (worth £650) are available to those who live or work in Hertfordshire. (A deposit is required)

Outreach Team leader 

• Hours: 37.5 hours per week  
• Salary: £29,000 – £30,500 per annum 
• Location: Flexible to one of our seven Wellbeing Centres dependent on location

Facilities Manager (maternity cover)

• Hours: 30-37.5 hours per week, worked across 4 or 5 days.
• Salary: £33,152 plus contribution to pension auto-enrolment
