Fantastic Friday Update

We are on the verge of August, hoping to enjoy again some sunny and warm days. 

August is National Road Victim Month. Visit the website if you want to find out more about this campaign, or need support after losing someone in a car accident. 

August is also Psoriasis Awareness Month. Being one of the most uncommon illnesses, Psoriasis affects over 20,000 individuals every single year. Although some of these cases are treated, some are not undiagnosed, causing more complications because people are unaware of the warning signs. Click here to find out more about this condition.

Next week you can find members of the Training team running some FREE Creative Fun with Numbers sessions for children and parents in Potters Bar and Borehamwood. Read below to find out more.

Throughout the summer holidays, our Community Centre in Farriers Way is getting busier and busier.

A book swap activity started on Thursday 18 July and will take place on every Thursday. Why don't you bring your old books and swap them for ones you haven't read yet? There will be a stand set up in or outside Farriers Way. You can also pop in for free refreshments whilst you select your books!

In August, every Thursday fun activities will take place in the garden and these will include: planting, plant pot decorating, growing your own veg and more.

Summer holidays in Hertfordshire start around Friday 19 July and end in September. Communities 1st has compiled a list of all available low-cost meal deals and travel options for you.

The Summer Reading Challenge 2024

The Summer Reading Challenge is a free holiday activity for children.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is all about creativity. From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there's something for everyone. Children will be able to find new reads linked to their favourite creative arts and access free activities at the library.

Children can take part either at the library or online. The in-person and online challenges are separate.

Love Parks Week 2024 (26 July - 4 August)

This annual campaign - made possible thanks to the players of People’s Postcode Lottery - celebrates parks, green spaces, and the dedicated volunteers and workers that look after them all year round. 

This FREE event will consist of a mix of speakers, informative stalls and physical activity sessions.

Take part in free local activities to help you stay strong, maintain balance and enhance flexibility alongside other people from your community.

Sessions include:

• Walking Football
• Seated Strength and Balance
• Beginner Tai Chi
• Back to Bowls
• Herts Health Walks
• Recreational Badminton

Please bring a water bottle on the day, as water facilities will be available. A light lunch will be provided, so please ensure to include any dietary requirements on your booking form. Please wear comfortable clothing and supportive shoes. All equipment will be provided for on the day.

Would you feel confident enough to act in an emergency? Practice live-saving skills with the help of Hertfordshire Fire Service. Free CPR Awareness sessions are being run by fire crews at Borehamwood and Elstree Fire Station and the Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership.

At the sessions, participants will learn about the recovery position, how to deal with an unconscious person who isn't breathing, CPR and how to use a defibrillator.

The sessions will take place at Borehamwood Fire Station on these following dates:

• Tuesday 20 August, 7pm to 8pm
• Friday 20 September, 2pm to 3pm

Para Dance UK aims to develop and promote dance as an inclusive leisure activity across the country for those who would otherwise be excluded.
Para Dance UK offers and runs courses online for people who want to provide their own inclusive dance classes. A limited number of fully funded courses (worth £650) are available to those who live or work in Hertfordshire. (A deposit is required)

• Hours: 30 hours per week  
• Salary: £25,000 – £26,000 per annum 
• Location: Flexible to one of our seven Wellbeing Centres

• Salary: £28,057 plus contribution to pension auto-enrolment
