The Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) represents a pivotal moment for the VCFSE sector. Despite potential changes to geographical borders and commissioning arrangements, one thing must remain constant – groups and volunteers will need to continue providing vital services, connecting people, and tackling inequality. To do this, it is essential that we work constructively with local government and other partners, including the NHS, in genuine partnership.
As a Local Infrastructure Organisation, Communities 1st carried out extensive engagement with our members across Hertsmere, St Albans, and Welwyn Hatfield to ensure that we could capture what matters most to them as they represent their communities, beyond the confines of the proposals.
The result is our VCFSE Sector Charter which sets out our priorities and future ambitions as a sector engaging with local government. We would like to see:
• Early and formal engagement with us in decision-making processes, • Recognition of the sector’s expertise in tackling health inequalities and improving wellbeing with appropriate investment and collaboration, • Fair and consistent funding, • Decisions that are made closer to the communities that they affect, • Reform that is built around inclusivity that serves everyone, and • Communities that can thrive because they have spaces, relationships, and opportunities that bring people together.
We are ready to work collaboratively as equal partners and urge local authorities to engage with the sector throughout the reorganisation to ensure new structures strengthen - rather than distance - our communities.
If you are have any concerns about how the LGR will affect your charity or group, please get in touch with us on memberservices@communities1st.org.uk
Best wishes Communities 1st
