Firstly, we would like to say thank you to all our volunteers who helped us over the Christmas period with our Christmas Calls and Visits!

 

As we turn into 2024 many people may have found a new inspiration to volunteer. If this is you then we have plenty of roles whether you're looking for a long-term role, short term role or just looking to volunteer as a one off. eBay Volunteer with The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre.

The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre is looking for volunteers to help run their eBay store and the eBay Sales Assistant. They are looking for volunteers to help with tasks that include writing article descriptions, creating listings, photography, packing and posting customer parcels, and dealing with questions from buyers.

Gardner/Grounds Maintenance with de Havilland Aircraft Museum

De Havilland Aircraft Museum are looking for anyone interest in working outdoors in a relatively modest gardening/ grounds maintenance capacity. Nothing really goes beyond what an average person might do in their own garden. Most of the large gardening work is carried out on a Monday, as the Museum is closed to visitors. However, some of our ground maintenance volunteers do work on other days.

Energy Agent with Communities 1st

The "Welcome Space Network" is a project designed to provide comprehensive support and resources to vulnerable and isolated individuals across Hertfordshire. This two-year project aims to establish a network of 30 Warm Welcome Hubs, offering a range of services including energy support, community engagement, benefits advice, and digital inclusion programmes in response to the challenges of loneliness, isolation, and energy-related hardships, particularly in relation to the cost of living crisis. We are looking for volunteers to be a friendly face and engage in conversation with those that attend the welcome spaces. Another responsibility of the role is for volunteers to provide practical advice on energy savings, safety and efficient home management. Full training will be provided.

SHORT TERM ROLES & MICRO VOLUNTEERING

Health Walk Leaders for Herts Health Walks

The Countryside Management Service would like to recruit more volunteers to support existing Hertfordshire Health Walks and set up new, shorter walks for people who are not currently active or are returning to activity after an injury or illness. Join their team of more than 200 volunteers who help others become healthier and happier by walking together outdoors. No experience is necessary. You can lead walks or provide support from the back. Volunteer once a week or once a month it is up to you. Training is free and nationally accredited.

Drop In Volunteers with Centre 33 St Albans

Centre 33 are looking for volunteers to assist them at their drop in centres. These centres provide an opportunity for those who are homeless, sofa-surfing, otherwise in unsecure accommodation, and those who are in accommodation but have difficulties in coping, to get a warm meal, a hot shower, some supplies and a space to meet others. Both of the spaces they need volunteers to help at are in are in St Albans. These drop in centres are run entirely by volunteers, and both day and evening sessions are managed by a team leader. This role could see you cooking and serving meals, cleaning up at the end of the session, chatting with attendees and full training will be provided. LONGER TERM VOLUNTEERING ROLES

Sales and Stock Volunteer with The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre

The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre is looking for Sales and Stock Assistants to support the shop management team in maximising sales by providing a professional approach to customer service and stock handling. You will be a person who has a courteous manner and a good standard of personal presentation, a confident individual who is able to work unsupervised, enjoys meeting and greeting the general public and who appreciates the value of teamwork and good customer care.

Volunteer Family Mentor with Home Start Hertfordshire

Do you have experience of parenting or caring for children?

Do you have 2-3 Hours a week to spare? If so, you could be the person they are looking for!

Volunteer Mentors support families in their homes. They offer a free training course to provide you with all the skills and information you will need. Home- Start is a local community network of trained volunteers highly skilled support helping families with young children through their most challenging times.

Counsellor Volunteer with Rennie Grove Peace Hospice

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice are looking for newly qualified or experienced counsellors who have an interest in working in palliative care, they can offer you a few hours a week, in a well-supported environment, where you can continue your CPD. Volunteers in this role provide Level 3 counselling support (NICE Guidance) to patients, carers, family members and close friends, from diagnosis, during treatment and following bereavement. This may involve one to one support in the clients home, in nursing/care homes, at their St Albans or Watford sites or over telephone or via a virtual platform.

Welcome Team Volunteers with St Albans Cathedral

St Albans Cathedral are looking for welcoming and friendly volunteers to join their welcome Team. This role plays an integral part in the overall Welcome offered at St Albans Cathedral. You will have a large impact on the visitor experience and enjoy high level of interaction with their visitors through answering questions, handing out information, helping in the shop and assisting in the interactive exhibition areas.

LET VOLUNTEERING ROLES COME TO YOU!

Communities 1st has launched Let’s Give, a new service for volunteers. You will be able to create your own space on our website, so that organisations can find out about you and reach out about their volunteering roles.

You won’t need to display any personal contact information as we will do all the brokerage, so we will put you in touch with the organisations that have reached out for you.

It’s a great way to showcase your skills and experience to local community groups, and can help match you with a role where you can make a real difference.

TRUSTEE ROLES

Treasurer with HSO - Herts Schools Outreach (UK) CIC

HSO, a recognized and pioneering organization, provides a specialised service aimed at offering early intervention and personalised assistance to foster and amplify positive mental health transformations in children and young individuals. Their support spans across Hertfordshire, catering to the mental well being of all children and youth. They are a small but rapidly growing charity at a pivotal moment in their evolution. They are looking for an exceptional person to take on the role of Treasurer / Trustee. The successful candidate will have a background in finance, strategy, governance, and risk management.

Partnership Board member with Leecliffe Big Local

Leecliffe Big Local are looking for dedicated Partnership Board Member volunteers to join their local organisation. The Partnership Board is a resident-led partnership that manages the Big Local programme, including events and projects in their area since 2012. The partnership board appoints its officers and can appoint sub-groups to help it carry out its responsibilities. You will meet on a monthly basis with all the 9 Partnership Board members as well as with a representative of the Local Trust, the Local Trusted Organisation’s representative, the Community Officer, the Volunteer Coordinator and Administration Assistant.

Trustee with Age Concern UK

Age Concern St Albans is a charity which runs Lunch clubs for older people to help address loneliness and improve social interaction. They are seeking a new Trustee to join their board of Trustees to enhance their current oversight of their charitable activities. Candidates should have an interest in providing community support to older people and improving the quality of life working with a small team running a local charity.

Volunteer Van Driver's Assistant with Isabel Hospice

Isabel Hospice are looking for Volunteer Van Driver Assistants Supporting their retail operations, you will be out and about working with their drivers, helping on events, donation days and deliveries. Flexible days and hours are available during the week or at weekends.

Fleet Coordinator with Barbara Bus Fund

Are you a special kind of person looking for a special kind of position? The Barbara Bus Fund is looking to recruit a volunteer to help look after its fleet of 10 wheelchair accessible vehicles based at Head Office, Stanmore. Based at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, the Fleet Coordinator will check vehicles before and after they have been used; keep the vehicles clean, keep accurate records of vehicle faults and communicate with the office. There will be the occasional need to drive the vehicles.

Volunteer Drivers with Age Concern UK  

Can you help Age Concern UK for a couple of hours on a Monday or Wednesday to drop off between 9:30am and 10:30am and then take home between 13:30pm and 14:30pm? Age Concern St Albans runs lunch clubs for older people to provide social interaction and combat loneliness. They aim to provide transport to their clients, and they rely on volunteer drivers to help get clients to the clubs. Mileage can be paid for this role.

Able2Enable Admin Assistant with Communities 1st

Able2enable takes a holistic approach to support individuals to develop key life skills, improve wellbeing and increase employability skills. We encourage individuals to grow within their capabilities by providing them with coaching and wellbeing support, training opportunities and supported volunteering placements. We are looking for a Volunteer Admin Assistant to support the project with tasks like following up clients to schedule appointments, emailing organisations about Able2Enable, researching volunteer and employment opportunities for clients and working with the lead on specific tasks relevant to Able2Enable.

Handyperson     

Communities 1st deliver a Handy Person Service designed to help those 60+ or on benefits, living in Hertsmere and St Albans & District to help with tasks they are unable to carry out themselves. We are looking for Handy Person Volunteers to help us help our community. We ask volunteers to undertake various light practical duties that may include changing lightbulbs, moving furniture and shopping for materials etc. We are a busy service and are looking for some friendly and caring volunteers to help fulfil demand. We can offer flexible hours, which suit both you and our clients’ needs. If you have a few hours to spare and would enjoy doing a bit of DIY whilst helping people who would really struggle to manage it themselves, please give us a call to discuss this opportunity further.

Community Car Driver Volunteers

We are looking for volunteer drivers to help our clients in the local community. Volunteers are needed to help people in Borehamwood, Shenley and Potters Bar who are unable to use public transport, attend health appointments, and reduce social isolation. What are they looking for? Driving skills, a clean licence, a roadworthy car, honesty and reliability and good timekeeping. We’re always in need of people willing to help us deliver our transport service.
