Welcome to our Volunteer Centre newsletter.

Volunteers are the backbone of our community, providing essential support to organisations and community groups in our local areas.

People and organisations in our community still need your help and we continue to be busy responding to their needs. The landscape of volunteering is always evolving so please do have a look below at all of the new and emerging voluntary roles we are looking to fill. We remain at your service doing all we can to help you give your time meaningfully. SPOTLIGHT

Treasurer with the Friday Club

The Friday Club are looking for a Treasurer to oversee the financial affairs of The Friday Club and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice. Some of the duties of a Treasurer will be to ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place, monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation, oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits, to liaise with committee members to ensure the financial viability of the organisation, to make fellow committee members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.

Welcome Team Volunteers with St Albans Cathedral

St Albans Cathedral are looking for welcoming and friendly volunteers to join their Welcome Team. This role plays an integral part in the overall welcome offered at St Albans Cathedral. You will have a large impact on the visitor experience and enjoy high level of interaction with their visitors through answering questions, handing out information, helping in the shop and assisting in the interactive exhibition areas.

Activities Volunteer with Hertsmere Mencap

Hertsmere Mencap is a small and active charity, supporting a membership of 250 children and adults with a learning disability along with their families and carers. They are looking for volunteers to help run their day and evening activities sessions in Borehamwood on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. You will join a lovely team of volunteers and will help us to run their activities successfully.

SHORT TERM ROLES & MICRO VOLUNTEERING

Event Volunteer for Redbourn Community Group

Redbourn Classic's is an event that helps raise crucial funds for Redbourn Community Group. This year’s event will showcase a selection of classic cars and motorbikes, and host exhibits and stalls. They are looking for volunteers for several different roles including Event Setup, Event Steward, and Clear Away Volunteers.

Health Walk Leaders for Herts Health Walks

The Countryside Management Service would like to recruit more volunteers to support existing Hertfordshire Health Walks and set up new, shorter walks for people who are not currently active or are returning to activity after an injury or illness. Join their team of more than 200 volunteers who help others become healthier and happier by walking together outdoors. No experience is necessary. You can lead walks or provide support from the back. Volunteer once a week or once a month it is up to you. Training is free and nationally accredited.

Volunteers for Canoe World Championship.

ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help in showcasing the world's best canoe slalom athletes competing at the Lee Valley White Water Centre, between 18 - 24 September 2023. There are a range of volunteer roles available across the event, both pre-event and during competition. You don’t need to be an expert about canoe slalom, or have even volunteered before, there will be a role to suit you. Lee Valley White Water Centre is renowned across the globe as one of the best white-water courses in the world and in 2023 will play host to around 300 of the world's best athletes from across 50 countries as they battle it out across a week of high-octane competition. LONGER TERM VOLUNTEERING ROLES

Service Volunteer with St Albans and District Shopmobility

Shopmobility is a service that provides manual wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters to help people, who may have limited mobility, to get around in St Albans City Centre. Their aim is to support people with limited mobility to improve their quality of life and reduce social isolation. The service has a stock of manual wheelchairs which can be hired out to Shopmobility members for a small charge per day. They are looking for volunteers to support their services.

Volunteer Publicity Officer with Elstree & Borehamwood Museum

Elstree and Borehamwood Museum are seeking a highly organised individual to develop PR campaigns and write marketing materials like newsletters, social media posts, and press releases. This role will require the volunteer to be the point of contact for external and internal communication.

Engagement Ambassador with Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care

Rennie Grove Peace is committed to linking people in their local area to their services. Engagement Ambassadors help spread the word about what they do, why it matters and represent RGP externally through visits, events, conferences and talks. Supporting the Community Engagement team, their Engagement Ambassadors will help to dispel myths about hospice care and educate the public about the role of the hospice in supporting patients and their families with life-limiting illness, from early diagnosis, throughout their illness, and, for families and carers, through to bereavement care.

People & Learning Advisor to the Board with St Albans Community Bank.

St Albans Community Bank are looking for a volunteer People & Learning Advisor to help them people plan, give advice and help with guidance on all people- related matters. This role will be key to helping the Board deliver its mission and thrive. This role will help you to develop skills while playing a vital role in helping the local community. They are looking for a volunteer to help for the for equivalent of 1 day per week (working flexibly).

LET VOLUNTEERING ROLES COME TO YOU!

Communities 1st has launched Let’s Give, a new service for volunteers. You will be able to create your own space on our website, so that organisations can find out about you and reach out about their volunteering roles.

You won’t need to display any personal contact information as we will do all the brokerage, so we will put you in touch with the organisations that have reached out for you.

It’s a great way to showcase your skills and experience to local community groups, and can help match you with a role where you can make a real difference.

TRUSTEE ROLES

Chairperson with St Albans District Scout Council

St Albans Scouts are looking for a chairperson to join their Trustee Board. The Trustee Board exists to support the District Commissioner in meeting the responsibilities of their appointment. Whilst all Trustees share collective responsibility for the smooth running of the Board and ensuring that their governance responsibilities are being met, the Chair of the Board of Trustees also chair the board meetings and work closely with the district commissioner to maintain effective communication.

The overall role of a treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s financial affairs, ensuring its viability and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are maintained. Chairperson Euro Youth Mental Health

Euro Youth Mental Health are searching for a Chairperson to join their Trustee board. As a small not-for-profit group with a big vision, this role is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who enjoys helping a small organisation grow and improve. This will be an online based role for a minimum of 3 hours a month, and as the development of the group progresses reduce to 3 hours a quarter, 3 management committee meetings and an Annual General Meeting annually (to be agreed).

DRIVING ROLES

Retail Van Driver with Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care

Are you confident to drive a van, and like working in a friendly team? We are looking for volunteers to drive our Retail and Trading vans from our main centre in Berkhamsted to and from our shops across Bucks and Herts. You will go out with a driver's mate and be contributing to the essential fundraising that is required to deliver our service.

Minibus Driver/Transportation with Herts Vision Loss

Herts Vision Loss are looking for volunteers with an empathetic nature who enjoy company and with a current driving licence to help them with transporting some of their service users, as well as minibus drivers for outings/trips. Minibus drivers must be over 21 and no specific driving qualification is required as the post is a volunteer role.

We are hosting our next Volunteers Managers Stronger Together Network meeting on the 13th of September from 2pm- 3:30pm. If you manage volunteers please come along. This network offers the chance to network with other volunteer managers, discuss challenges, share best practice and network.

COMMUNITIES 1ST VOLUNTEERING ROLES

Men that Meet

Men That Meet is a community group for Hertsmere's men - a relaxed place to meet for good conversation, interesting activities and complimentary refreshments. It is an informal drop-in, men from all age groups are welcome. From simply talking to someone to facilitating the activities, there are many opportunities for volunteers to support people who attend the sessions. The aim is to provide a warm, friendly, inclusive and welcoming space for people who attend the activities. Volunteers are expected to be open-minded and non-judgemental. Ideally volunteers should be over 18 years old and be able to demonstrate good levels of empathy.

Handyperson     

Communities 1st deliver a Handy Person Service designed to help those 60+ or on benefits, living in Hertsmere and St Albans & District to help with tasks they are unable to carry out themselves. We are looking for Handy Person Volunteers to help us help our community. We ask volunteers to undertake various light practical duties that may include changing lightbulbs, moving furniture and shopping for materials etc. We are a busy service and are looking for some friendly and caring volunteers to help fulfil demand. We can offer flexible hours, which suit both you and our clients’ needs. If you have a few hours to spare and would enjoy doing a bit of DIY whilst helping people who would really struggle to manage it themselves, please give us a call to discuss this opportunity further.

Neighbourly Walks                                     

We are looking for some volunteers who would like to support people through our Neighbourly Walks scheme. We know how beneficial walking can be for the mind and the body, and we want to support as many people in the community as we can to maintain their independence and get some fresh air while doing it. In particular we are looking for a volunteer who is trained in supporting individuals with visual impairments. The client would like support on a neighbourly walk twice a month, based in AL3 area.
